19th C. The Bambara are found in central and southern Mali. The locks, usually owned by women and symbolizing the union of two people, can be offered to them by their husbands at the time of a birth or to celebrate the installation of the wife at her husband’s house. They have practical applications as locks on dwellings, but more importantly, food stores such as granaries. 17″x15″x2.5″
