Description
19th C. Fine carved helmet that was likely part of an overall ceremonial funerary mask. Crane type bird carved in full form on top and in bas relief on sides. The Yaouré form a subgroup of the Akan people present in Ivory Coast and Ghana. Geographically close to the Baoulé and the Gouros, the art of the Yaouré was influenced by these neighboring ethnic groups, and vice versa. The Yoouré, Yahouré masked dancers were not to be seen by women, and it was also forbidden to photograph them. 9.75″x8.5″x7″
