Meiji Period Japanese Carved Bone Ceremonial Tanto Dagger

$540.00

Description

The scabbard (saya) and handle (tsuka) are constructed from carved bone, likely ox or cow. You can see visible “seams” or segments where multiple pieces of bone have been joined together to form the length of the scabbard. Ivory, by contrast, was usually carved from a single dense piece. While functional versions existed, these highly ornate bone pieces were primarily created for the export and tourist trade during the late 19th and early 20th centuries. They were intended as decorative “Grand Tour” souvenirs rather than combat-ready weapons. The surface is decorated in low-relief carving that has been inked or stained black to highlight the details. These carvings depict traditional Japanese scenes, such as samurai, figures in a landscape, or floral motifs. 10.5″x1.25″x.75″ Please see pictures for condition details as the photos are considered part of the description.
