16th-17th C. Ming Dynasty Carved Wood Polychrome Guanyin Statue

$928.00

Description

Description: This Guanyi (Kwan-yin) is carved from wood and was originally polychromed, based on the wear and the style it is probably late Ming dynasty and dates from the 16th or 17th century. Some paint chipping and a couple of cracks, but in really good condition for its age. Guan Yin frequently appears standing or sitting, as in this case, on a lotus flower, a ubiquitous Buddhist symbol of enlightenment and spiritual awakening. The lotus grows from the muddy waters of samsara, yet remains unstained by impurities, representing the transcendence of suffering and the attainment of enlightenment.
