Description
Signed Angie Yazzie Taos Pueblo on bottom. The vessel is made from traditional micaceous clay, which is durable and has a natural shimmer due to tiny mica flakes. The dark, almost black, finish is achieved through a reduction firing process, a common method for creating traditional utilitarian pots in Northern New Mexico pueblos. The applied bear figure is a traditional symbol of strength and courage in Native American culture. The unique addition of a gemstone inset in the bear’s back is a contemporary artistic choice, linking traditional pottery with the use of natural materials often seen in bear fetishes from other Southwestern tribes. Angie Yazzie is an award-winning master potter renowned for her exceptionally thin-walled micaceous clay pieces. She was taught traditional techniques by her mother and grandmother and is known for creating large jars and bowls. 5″ x 5.75″ x 5.75″
