Leo Salazar Signed Hand-Carved Cedar Bulto Praying Franciscan Taos Folk Art
$560.00
Description
A signed hand-carved cedar bulto of a praying Franciscan friar by celebrated Taos, New Mexico santero Leo Salazar. The figure stands in a hooded Franciscan habit with both hands pressed together in prayer — a technically demanding composition requiring the arms to be fully freed from the wood. A cross is carved in relief on the front of the robe. The top of the head shows a carved tonsure — the shaved crown of a Franciscan monk — a fine detail rarely seen on bultos of this scale. Natural, unfinished aromatic cedar throughout, with dramatic natural knots incorporated into the lower robe. Signed “LEO SALAZAR” carved into the end-grain base. 21″x6″x5.75″ 6 lbs. Please see pictures for condition details as the photos are considered a part of the description.
