Victorian Stenciled and Monogramed Document Box & Portable Desk

Classic Eastlake style American folk art painted document and portable desk, circa 1820–1860. It’s decorated with hand-painted initials “D S M” which are flanked by wheat/laurel branch motifs on a dark red-brown painted ground. Genuine folk art feel – perhaps Pennsylvania Dutch in origin. The molded, beveled lid has its original hardware and is heavily worn, commensurate with its age. Hinged compartment is practical and solid.
