$312.00

Description

The chest features complex hand-stenciled or paint-decorated geometric patterns, including sgraffito-style wavy lines and repetitive horizontal bands. These motifs were common in rural 19th-century settlements as a way to beautify simple utilitarian objects. Typical of this era, the chest utilizes nailed case with butt construction and is likely made of poplar. It retains original period hardware, including a central metal lock plate and hand-forged hinges. Inside lid has crayon and pencil scribbles from days as a toy chest. 16″x28.5″15.25″ Please see pictures for condition details as the photos are considered part of the description.
